Cath Lab Banana Split Party

I want to share a story with you about a 21 month old boy with Down Syndrome. He was born with a severe heart defect and has had multiple heart surgeries. Unfortunately, he is at the point in his care where there is little his medical team can do for him. Recently, his parents made the difficult decision to stop his supportive care and declare him a DNR (do not resuscitate).

Ryan’s parents have started a “bucket list” for their son. So far, he has shared a beer with his dad (a root beer, that is), gotten his first Steelers tattoo (press-on), ridden a bike (with dad helping to hold him on), and gotten a speeding ticket (on his toy Jeep).

When Ryan’s mom was asked what could be done for her, she replied, “Have a banana split party with your kids for dinner and enjoy the family time.”  Now, thousands of people from all over the world are having banana split parties in honor of Ryan.

On June 22, the Cardiac Cath Lab had their own banana split party to honor this brave little boy. We posted our picture on his facebook page with a message that read: “Ryan, May your days be filled with love, joy, and happiness. Your friends in the Cardiac Cath Lab – Annapolis, MD.”
