“The Heart of Caring,” a poem by Sharolyn Bush, RN
AAMC Nurses, why do we do what we do? As we prepare for Hospital Week and Nurses Week, take a few moments to pause and reflect. You are the heart of caring.
“The Heart of Caring” by Sharolyn Bush, RN (SCU)
I look to you, I need your care
I see compassion in your eyes
You hold my hand, your words are kind
You give me peace of mind
I am afraid, scared, and worried
You sense my fear; your manner is calm, never hurried
I am alone, I need your comfort
A simple prayer, a word of peace
I am a spiritual being; you call me by my name
I am more than just a number, more than just a face
You nurture me in mind, body, and spirit
I give you my trust, my faith
I reach out to you, you hold my hand
I don’t say the words, but you understand
Here in this moment, here in this place
Where have I been and where am I going?
I am filled with uncertainty
Show me the way
Together we create a circle, to the unity of life
An environment of hope and understanding
A warm gentle touch is all that I ask
You place my needs first, before the next task
You are present in the moment, trusting, and healing
You practice loving kindness, teaching, and sharing
You are my nurse, the heart, of caring.
