Teresa Putscher, RN, steps out of her comfort zone!
Not long ago the thought of being out in the community talking to strangers about their health would have terrified me. Now, after several outings with the AAMC Wellness team, most of my fears have dissipated. In fact, I want to encourage you to go out and inspire wellness!
Recently, I was contacted by one of my fellow oncology nurses, Saisa Neel, RN, and asked to participate in a Cancer Awareness outreach project at her place of worship. Saisa is the chairperson of the Health Team Committee at Masjid Muhammad. This event was to be held in a mosque and, having never been in a mosque, I turned to Saisa to guide me regarding any particular customs that should be observed.
On that day, several health care providers spoke about specific cancers and emphasized healthy life choices. The kind and welcoming men and women at Masjid Muhammad learned a lot about cancer awareness, and they also took the time to teach me about their culture.
Please, consider stepping outside of your comfort zone and reaching out to your community. It can be an enriching and enlightening experience for everyone involved. As nurses we have a special calling to educate others. I guarantee it can really be a “feel good” moment. -Teresa Putscher, BSN, RN, OCN
