ESP nurses Cyndi and Maria training in disaster preparedness.
On June 2, the Volunteer Center of Anne Arundel County held Volunteer Center Mobilization Training. Fifteen volunteers, including AAMC’s own Cyndi Vaughn, RN, and Maria Reinitz, RN, attended this exciting event.
They received training in disaster preparedness, as well as the function of Mobilization Centers in managing spontaneous, unaffiliated volunteers. They even simulated disasters to test the system.
Volunteer Mobilization Centers act as a reception and referral center for spontaneous volunteers; they utilize volunteers in ways that complement response and recovery efforts instead of complicating them for increased effectiveness. This allows first responders to fulfill their duties without the added responsibility of managing volunteers. Volunteer Centers in the community then can direct and place volunteers where they are needed.
The next training by the Volunteer Center of Anne Arundel County will be held in October, 2012. Anyone interested in participating can contact the center at (410) 897-9207.
