Diabetes Resource Champions… start your engines!

Diabetes Resource Champions… start your engines!

The AAMC Diabetes Resource Champions Grand Prix Kick-Off was held on September 7. Fifty-two staff members attended—nurses, directors, managers, educators, pharmacists and dieticians. We were also delighted to welcome staff from nearby hospitals, including Georgetown and Medstar.

The theme—Grand Prix—was adopted with the idea that “Setting the Course” is just a beginning, diabetes education involves many laps.

Lap 1 began with the guest speaker, Dr. Michelle Magee, MD, from Medstar Diabetes and Research Institutes, who discussed the pathophysiology of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and insulin therapy in the hospital.

The Diabetes Resource Crew presented Lap 2, nutrition and blood sugar monitoring, and Lap 3, medication management and diabetes emergencies. Case studies and AAMC protocols were reviewed.

Staff will continue their involvement  as Diabetes Resource Champions through monthly meetings, participation in their unit’s diabetes education and the subcommittee of their choice–Continuing Education Programs for staff and patients; Publications and Communications, and Community Program Involvement.

Are you a Diabetes Resouce Champion? Where will your next lap take you?
