Be inspired! Charlotte’s Iron Girl story

Charlotte WallaceLast year, I was inspired by Sherry Perkins, our COO/CNO, who completed the Iron Girl triathlon and blogged about it. I decided I too could be an Iron Girl—if only I knew how to really swim (instead of just treading water with a little kick).

Inspired to show my two girls, ages 8 and 10, that girls are strong, too, and that you can set a goal and achieve it, I signed up for the 2012 Iron Girl (and swim lessons).

On August 19, I joined my fellow AAMC teammates and participated in my first Iron Girl! So yes, now I can say I am an Iron Girl, but I think I should tell you the truth:

As I entered the water, my goggles filled up… with tears.  As I’m sure you already guessed, panic attacks are not so good at the start of a 2+ hour triathlon while in open water. It took hearing my kid’s voices echoing back my words of encouragement to help settle me down. I couldn’t give up 10 minutes into the race! No way! What kind of example would that be?!

My overall time was not very fast, but I met my goal—I finished!  -Charlotte Wallace, RN

Thanks, Charlotte, for sending in this personal and inspiring story. There is no doubt you are an amazing role model to your children and to all of us.

Who’s going to be at Iron Girl next year?!
