AAMC’s first Collaborative Skills Day — were you there?
Skills day is a yearly opportunity for nursing staff and patient care technicians (PCT) to update their skills. In the past, each unit did this separately. This year, nurses and PCTs from various units reported to our state-of-the-art SAIL Center for a collaborative learning experience.
Participating units included: HVU, NCU, ACE, Flex, JSC, GSU, OBS, Endo, ONC, OPIV, diabetes and wound nurses, Cath Lab, IR and PRCU.
Educators from several units helped organize the event, working together to provide staff with pertinent and practical content for each of the skills stations. Nurses and techs from all over the hospital helped facilitate the learning, ensuring all staff received the same information and streamlining the process. Morning and afternoon sessions on multiple days provided convenience for both day and night shift employees.
Feedback from staff indicated they especially enjoyed working through the code cart station. Using a scavenger hunt, staff located different medications and equipment from within the code cart. Since the code cart is unfamiliar territory to many nurses, having an opportunity to explore it outside of a code situation is greatly appreciated!
