A Memorial Day tribute on HVU

“We don’t know them all…but we owe them all”

This past Memorial Day, Heart and Vascular Unit nurse Kimberly McCarthy, BSN, RN, (a marine pilot mom and USNA sponsor mom) and the HVU team wanted to observe the meaning behind this special day. “Memorial Day is not a celebration, but a remembrance,” said Kim. “I also believe it is a wonderful time to celebrate our country’s freedom.”

“I set up a Fallen Comrades table in memory of Fallen Soldiers and Military Nurses. My hope was to have everyone that passed take a moment in appreciation of the sacrifice given by our military and families. The military families need to know…. we will never forget.

“There is symbolism in what is placed on the table: for example the Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain those lost, the lemon reminds us of the bitter fate of those who will never return, the glass in inverted because they cannot toast with us at this time, and the chair is empty because they are no longer with us.”

Thank you to Kim and HVU, as well as the other units who observed Memorial Day in their own special way. We thank all the brave men and women who laid down their lives to safeguard our nation.
