“CSI Seeking New Cast Members at AAMC” by Emily Groves, BSN, RN
Okay, so we’re not talking about CSI the television show. We’re actually referring to CSI, AAMC’s Community Service Initiative. But the rest is true. CSI wants to collaborate with you!
Why volunteer? Dorothy I. Height, former chair and president emerita of the National Council of Negro Women, believed:
Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It’s important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It’s the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.”
Ms. Height, a well known civil and women’s right activist, was a life-long volunteer. Her statement rings true for many of us. Volunteering and providing community service allows us to give to others—be it time, resources, or assistance with hands-on tasks. In return, we receive a sense of belonging, new friendships, and often, an appreciation for our own lives and circumstances.
The goal of CSI is to encourage and provide opportunities for employees to participate in acts of community service. To help achieve this, a partnership with the Light House, a homeless prevention support center, was formed. Over the past nine months, the members of the initiative have worked to create a foundation and framework to enable AAMC’s nurses to teach health prevention classes for clients of the Light House. Other opportunities include volunteering at events that support fundraising for the Light House (i.e. Kidwalk earlier this month and Ride for Shelter in September) and participating in Anne Arundel County’s Homeless Resource Day.
A long term goal is to provide nursing services for a clinic that is being built in the new Light House building (expected opening is September 2010).
We also hope to collaborate with AAMC staff to help promote other volunteer opportunities. Staff who involved in volunteer work and are looking for additional support from other employees (i.e. Relay for Life, Dare to Care) should contact CSI initiative members.
To access information on volunteering with the CSI, log in to Healthstream. Click on the blue “Catalog” tab and search for “Light House Shelter.” The results will list the general volunteer information, as well as the specific material for the various classes that are taught at the Light House.
AAMC Nurses, why do you volunteer?
