Your smile for the day — pediatric SSU patient receives a very special pillowcase…

Ryan’s Case for Smiles, formerly known as ConKerr Cancer, is an organization solely dedicated to helping sick children cope with the stress of their illness by providing them with a bright and whimsical pillowcase. Ryan’s Case for Smiles is made up of volunteers who purchase and coordinate the fabrics, then sew, iron, package and deliver hundreds of thousands of pillowcases to hospitals nationwide.

We are thrilled to share that the Short Stay Unit at AAMC was chosen to receive a ceremonial Millionth Pillowcase. We cannot even begin to describe the joy and pride we feel at receiving this honor.

The lucky little boy who received the millionth pillowcase was Liam, a 4 year-old preschooler. To celebrate this event, we held a special unveiling of the millionth pillowcase with Liam, his mother and Pre-op staff. Special guests were Jackie Holson, the volunteer who made the pillowcase, and Amy Henley, who owns Material Girls Quilt Shop, where local sew-ins take place.

Volunteers make about 200 pillowcases during a sew-in and this year alone, Jackie has delivered 621 pillowcases to AAMC.

The joy and excitement on the faces of Liam and his mother were heartwarming. Many thanks to Ryan’s Case for Smiles, who help make the hospital experience special and personal for every child, simply by providing them their very own, one-of-a-kind pillowcase.

Special thanks to Jackie, Amy and all the volunteers who work their magic to put smiles on the faces of children in the hospital. -Jo Ann Shelley, BSN, RN, MA, CAPA
