How to make a personal connection with your patients (and why it’s so important) — an interview with Barbara Jacobs
AAMC’s Chief Nurse, Barbara Jacobs, MSN, RN, was recently interviewed by HealthLeaders Media on her work promoting personal connections between healthcare staff and their patients.
Barbara’s interest in this area began about 5-6 years ago, when she saw healthcare changing. “We were getting everything into the computers and getting so technologically savvy and had volumes of information on a patient, but we were missing the human side of their care.”
Why are personal connections so important? In a nutshell, personal connections are patient- and family-centered care in action. These moments of connection make the patient feel cared for – which leads to many other benefits, like improved patient outcomes and satisfaction.
How can you personally connect with your patients? It doesn’t take much time or effort and, Barbara states, “it’s good for us, the caregivers, also.”
