An AAMC volunteer becomes a patient — thanks ACE staff for “kindness and care”

We love to share stories of patient- and family-centered care in action at AAMC. Here, a patient — who is also one of our treasured volunteers — writes in to recognize the ACE Unit, along with several nurses and a physician who made a significant difference in his stay.

My wife and I have had the pleasure of working as volunteers at Anne Arundel Medical Center for a number of years. During that time, we have always been treated as equals and with respect by the nurses and other staff at your fine facility. So it was no surprise to us when I received outstanding care as a patient at AAMC last month.

I was admitted to the hospital through the Emergency Department and remained as an inpatient for six days in the ACE Unit. The attention and care was wonderful, and the staff — both nurses and patient care technicians — could not have been nicer. They were not only attentive to my medical needs, but also were very accommodating to both me and my wife who stayed at the hospital throughout the admission.

It is clear that the nurses are not only highly qualified and experienced, but also well trained in assisting patients through difficult circumstances. Their kindness and care provided great relief to both of us in dealing with my medical situation.

While all of the nurses/technicians were exceptional, there are three in particular who deserve individual mention — Edgar Santos, RN, Arianna Harman, RN, and April Thayer, RN (Flex). They covered a number of shifts during my stay and were readily available whenever the need arose. We felt that my condition was always closely monitored and that my improvement was largely attributable to the treatment which they, and others, provided. Please extend our appreciation to each of these nurses.

We would also like to extend thanks to Dr. Prasad Savana who was also involved in my care. He took a great deal of time to answer our questions and address our concerns. As with all of the staff, he was reassuring and encouraging.

We feel very fortunate to live in this area and receive the benefit of such outstanding care at AAMC. My wife and my family join in extending our appreciation.
