Interventional Radiology – patient care on the go!

Interventional Radiology – patient care on the go!

You’ve seen us—a blur in scrubs rounding a corner…ultrasound machine, supply cart, laptop, and radiologist in tow.

We are the nurses and radiologic technologists of Interventional Radiology (IR). We’re based on the second floor, but you’re more likely to find us at a patient’s bedside. Ultrasound guided procedures can often be done there just as effectively, causing minimal disruption in the patient’s day.

IR nursing supports procedures that require the use of imaging in a minimally invasive radiologic procedure—the nurse provides conscious sedation and monitoring of the patient throughout. Angiography, adult and pediatric MRI’s, CT biopsies, ultrasound guided paracentesis, thoracentesis and interventional spine clinic are a few of the most common procedures we perform.

Because IR staff often see our patient’s frequently, we develop personal relationships. We get to know about their spouses, children, and grandchildren. We share stories, pictures, and even tears with our patients throughout their course of care. Often as they shift from outpatient to inpatient.

IR staff is made up of one nurse educator, six staff nurses and four radiologic technologists. Turnover is extremely low—it’s been more than three years since we’ve needed to hire a nurse, and over six years since we’ve needed to hire a technologist.  A close knit group with over 175 years of combined experience, we pride ourselves on cohesiveness, teamwork, and patient/physician satisfaction.

Please come by the second floor to see our department, stop us in the hallway to ask a question, or call our mobile phone at x3663. We are available Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.—a nurse and tech are on call nights and weekends.

When my precious one-year old nephew had to come to IR for a scary procedure I was very impressed with the care he and his parents received from the IR team. You really seemed to understand how frightening the process was for the entire family, and you put them (and me) at ease. Not to mention, you took really good care of my nephew! Once again, AAMC has provided for my family – it is such a blessing to not have to go to Baltimore or DC to receive care.

I think that all of you in IR are invaluable.
Thank you for all that you do.
