Globally-minded: AAMC donates surplus supplies to resource-poor communities around the world
On October 10, a shipment of surplus equipment and supplies were delivered to Global Links, a medical relief and development organization in Pittsburgh, PA.
Global Links is dedicated to promoting environmental stewardship and improving health in resource-poor communities, primarily in Latin America and the Caribbean. They provide hospitals with a socially and environmentally beneficial alternative to sending hundreds of tons of still-useful surplus materials to landfills, while providing necessary medical equipment to needy communities around the world.
The supplies donated are not expired or recalled, they are items AAMC no longer uses for various reasons, which cannot be sold back to the vendors (i.e. due to a product change/substitution or incorrectly shipped item).
Trucking company Pitt Ohio generously collects the items and delivers them back to Pittsburgh in their empty trucks, free of charge.
Through the collaborative effort of many departments, AAMC was able to donate:
– 2 pallets of scrubs (over 2,800 scrubs)
– 1 pallet of BD safety syringes various sizes
– 2 pallets of OR gowns XL–Long
– 4 pallets of IV poles (30 total)
– 6 CPR boards
– 1 case of hair nets
– 2 stretcher/cribs
At AAMC our mission is to “To enhance the health of the people we serve.” I’m proud to say, thanks to the help of many, our mission has gone global! -Charlotte Wallace, RN
