AAMC welcomes families – Q&A and fabulous prizes!
Q. What is the new policy on visiting? A: Our new policy states that we welcome families 24-hours a day, as the patient and/or family wishes. The patient determines who their family is.
Q: Who does this affect? A: Everyone who interacts with patients and families, in all departments.
Q: When does this new policy start? A: June 1, 2011.
Q: Why is this important? A: Family members provide support, comfort, and key information for their loved ones in the hospital. Research has shown that the care of patients is improved when they are surrounded by loved ones—many hospitals are changing visiting policies to reflect this data. Patient and family-centered care involves listening to what the patients and their families have to say about everything, from visiting hours to changing our signs around the hospital.
Q: Are there any exceptions? A: Yes. Decisions to restrict or limit presence must be discussed with the patient and/or family. Family and/or visitor presence may be limited depending on circumstances that may not be safe for the patient and/or family.
