Lynn Graze, RN, (right) and Jan Clemons (second from right) collaborated with Congressional staff and nursing leaders from across the country at ANA’s annual Lobby Day on Capitol Hill.

On June 12, 2014, Jan Clemons, RN, and Lynn Graze, RN, attended the American Nurses Assoiciation’s (ANA) annual  Lobby Day on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C. They joined over 200 nurses from 42 states and had the privilege of meeting with Congressional staff to discuss current nursing bills that impact nursing practice.

The four discussed bills were: “Safe Patient Handling & Mobility”- The Nurse and Health Care Worker Protection Act of 2013 , H.R. 2480;  “Safe Staffing”- The Registered Nurse Safe Staffing Act, H.R. 1821/S. 2353; “The Home Health Care Planning and Improvement Act”, H.R. 2504/S. 1332; and Durable Medical Equipment, H.R. 3833.

The highlight of the day was meeting with Senator Barbara Mikulski, who sits on the Appropriations Committee. Senator Mikulski was presented with the Congressional Nurse Advocate Award for her diligent advocacy for national nursing practices. Senator Mikulski requested another meeting with the nurses in six weeks to discuss funding options for continuing education for the professional nurse.

Jan and Lynn are looking forward to the opportunity to do their part in advancing the nursing profession!
