Three things you need to know about the DAISY Award
The DAISY Award is dedicated to Patrick Barnes, a young man who lost his life in 1999 to Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Patrick’s Father, Mark Barnes, stated that during the eight weeks of Patrick’s hospitalization, he and his family experienced “the best of nursing.” Nurses delivered care to Patrick and his family with kindness and compassion. The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses was created in Patrick’s memory. The goal of the award is to ensure that nurses know how deserving they are of recognition for the education, training, and brainpower they put into their work and for the compassion in which they deliver their care.
1. The DAISY Award is for nurses who make a powerful difference at the bedside.
Most nurses who receive the DAISY Award are surprised and humbled — they usually say something like, “But I didn’t do anything special. I was just doing my job.” But extraordinary acts of compassion or relationships created with a patient or family are very special — they can make a powerful difference in a patient’s experience and outcomes.
2. AAMC has awarded this honor to 16 amazing staff nurses since May 2010.

3. Increasingly, patients have been nominating their nurses for the DAISY Award.
It is a special feeling to know that someone you cared for in the hospital appreciated you so much that they nominated you for a national award. Make sure the patients and families on your floor know about this award and can access to the nomination form online: they can search DAISY on the main website or use this direct link: DAISY Award Nomination Form.
And of course, if you know of an extraordinary nurse who you feel is deserving of this exceptional recognition, please submit a DAISY Award nomination for them. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
