The AAMC Foundation Nursing Scholarship application is now available! The deadline to apply is February 1, 2016. Access the application here. Here’s how Kathy Sowa, RN, a nurse on Neuro Care Unit, benefited from her scholarship:

KathyThe Institute of Medicine’s (IOM’s) Future of Nursing recommends that the proportion of nurses with baccalaureate degrees be increased to 80% by 2020.

In order to meet that goal, financial assistance that ensures nurses are able to progress academically at a steady rate is extremely helpful. For many nurses, myself included, being able to pay the upfront cost of more than one course every few months is crucial to meeting the IOM’s goal.

I started my online Walden University BSN program in July of 2014 and will finish my classes by April 2016. The Nursing Scholarship funded by the Heritage Harbour Women’s organization has allowed me to complete my degree in less than two years by taking courses year-round. I have even been able to afford to double-up on some classes at times.

Without the initial funds from the scholarship, I would have run out of money – and probably would have taken intermittent leaves of absence from school while saving more money and securing more funds, thus delaying my progress.

The year 2020 will be here before we know it, so I encourage anybody who thinks they might be interested in going back to school to start planning now. The application process is simple and many of us who have received these scholarships can help you get it started.  Your BSN is closer — and more affordable — than you think!
